Designing a Website Before Building It

Designing website BEFORE Building it.

Web design is all about the user experience – and a huge part of creating a positive user experience on your website is giving them what they want when they want it.

If you’re trying to sell your products or services online, don’t make your site’s visitors click through pages of sales pitch before they can click the ‘Buy Now’ button.

Make it quick and simple for people to sign up for your services, buy your products or schedule an appointment with you.

You need your website to solve your visitors’ problems quickly and efficiently.

Hopefully by solving their problems they will become paying customers. If your website is easy to navigate then they’re more likely to make a purchase, sign-up for your products/services or get in touch.

An effective website should be:

Simple – Your website can look great without being over the top and having every pop-up, colour or latest design fad.

Standard – Generally speaking a website should have a logo, navigation, header, footer and content and most people expect to find these in particular positions.

Don’t forget the prime reason for a website is to be a lead generating business tool!

Webdesign, Layout, Website

A website must be:

Goal oriented – Make sure you have a “Call to Action”

Designed for people – People generally don’t want to read through large blocks of text.

Responsive – More people are visiting websites on mobile or smaller devices such as laptops, tablets or phones. If your site doesn’t look good on these devices people will simply leave the site.

Four steps to the perfect website design.

Before building a website, you should have thought about the following

  1. Goals
    1. What are your customers looking for
    2. What problems they have that you can solve
    3. What do they like/dislike
    4. Why would they choose you over a competitor

As a business you have additional goals

    • Increase revenue
    • Maximise profitability
    • Improved customer experience
    • Automating or improving a process or service
    • Showcase your products or services

  1. Content
    1. Speak in a language that your customers understand
    2. Ask yourself what information your customer is looking for and how best to communicate it to them
    3. There is a saying “Content is king” and this is as true today as ever, your content is a key part of getting your site ranked
    4. When someone visits your site, they want to get to what they are looking for in as few steps as possible, no matter how beautiful a website is, it will fail if your customers can’t find what they are looking for
    5. Keep the website structure as simple as possible (this should always be mapped out before building your website)

  2. Design
    1. A simple sketch or a wireframe diagram is fine, add a map showing the pages and the structure, it’s a great way of highlighting issues in the basic design

  3. Functional
    1. Less is usually more! Particularly if you are selling online (Ecommerce), your customers will have probably bought online before, there are certain steps that they expect to find and if you make the “buy” difficult they will simply abandon the goods they added to the cart and go elsewhere.

A good web designer can guide you through the process the key is to listen, you may think you have the perfect design but if there are flaws in your cunning plan, its best to find out early when changes can be discussed and implemented easily.

In short, your new website should have:

  • A clear purpose
  • A clear audience
  • Clear easy navigation
  • Be responsive
  • Be quick
  • Be unique (its part of why people notice you)
  • Have an SSL certificate
And should include:
  • Testimonials and reviews
  • Social media links
  • Have a visible, strong Call to Action
